Mastercard announced Verifiable Intent on March 5, 2026. It is an open-source, standards-based framework designed to bring cryptographic trust to agentic commerce. The framework creates a tamper-resistant record of exactly what a user authorized when an AI agent acts on their behalf, establishing a shared source of truth across merchants, payment networks, and AI platforms.
Verifiable Intent is aligned with Google's Agent Payments and UCP intent APIs, and supported by IBM, Fiserv, and other infrastructure partners. The open-source specification is published at verifiableintent.dev. Mastercard has confirmed the framework will be integrated into Agent Pay intent APIs within months of the March 2026 announcement, providing a trust layer that merchants can use to verify the provenance and scope of agent-initiated purchases.
