Square is a payment and commerce platform used by millions of small and medium businesses, from coffee shops and salons to boutique retailers and online stores. On July 1, 2026, Square announced a ChatGPT app and Claude plugin that let eligible US Food & Beverage sellers be discovered, expose live menus, and receive orders directly from AI conversations with no extra technical setup.
Square is also partnering with Google to co-develop the UCP spec for local food ordering and delivery. The first AI ordering integrations route orders through Square Online Ordering into the seller's existing Square POS and Kitchen Display System, while Square handles menu, hours, ordering, and reporting infrastructure behind the scenes.
Square's UCP direction matters because it extends agentic commerce beyond traditional e-commerce catalogs into local restaurants and service businesses. As UCP expands globally, Square can give its 4.5 million-plus sellers a path into AI-powered discovery, checkout, and voice commerce channels without each seller managing separate integrations.
